thesis

The techniques used by Jane Austin in Pride and Prejudice to introduce her characters is meant to mislead the reader and force them into the same misguided prejudice as these characters.  In contrast, Hurston, in Their Eyes Were Watching God, does not rely on gossip. Instead, she wants her readers to not judge her characters too closely until they know them better.  In comparing the two books, we discover how Austen uses introductions to show how bad judgment is, while Hurston’s concern is the opposite; she strives to show how judgment is important and you should always keep one eye open in a corrupt and often dangerous world.
