The line I chose from Andrew Marvell's Coy mistress is" Now therefore, while the youthful hue
Sits on thy skin like morning dew,". This line stands out to me because like how The author uses a very poetic type line in order to metaphorically compare the young of the day to the coy mistress sexual prime. I like how the author is implying go to bed with me now while your as fresh and beautiful as can be before you turn into an old hag. The line above is accurate in that time does go by fast and if you don't make the most of it while your at your prime is very unfortunate choice to make. I enjoy how the author is urging the mistress to sleep with him in a very convinceing reasonings that the mistress will now have trouble refusing.
I agree with David's statement. Unlike Nick who also used this same line, David realized that this line is in fact a metaphor for the entire poem. While the morning dew is representative of the passsing time and fleeting days, the youthful hue is also a direct comparison to the girl's beauty and youth. This line contains one of the essential governing metaphors to Marvell's argument.
ReplyDeleteDavid, while I agreed with most of your points my favorite is that Marvell is using metaphors to highly enhance the readers understanding of what he describes. Marvell uses this technique all throughout the poem such as "My vegetable love should grow; Vaster than empires, and more slow". Same as you said, Marvell is using the way a vegetable grows to allude to how his love too, always grows, more and more complex everyday, and even though slow it is always growing.
ReplyDeleteDavid, I agree with your claim that Marvel wants to make the most out of life while he has it, and with this woman that he desires. Although you describe his motives as very direct and blunt, they seem to be more or less true; although, they may be a little bit stretched. Good job, overall!
ReplyDeletegood exchange of ideas.
