Tone/mood #8

Tone and mood sets is author's perspective on that subject affects the reader's view on the poem. For example in "To His Coy Mistress" Andrew Marvell expresses if only there was more time in the first stanza, and after he shifts his tone to trying to scare his coy mistress and the tonal shift becomes "Carpe Diem". Carpe Diem as the tone emphasizes the rush the author is at to sleep with the Coy Mistress while she is young and pure.

Diction

Diction is the author's creative word choice in poetry. Diction is what creates the tone/rhythm in writing. For instance in Hamlet, Shakespeare uses diction in Hamlet and Claudius's speech pattern. Shakespeare's diction in Hamlet's speech pattern helps create a very indecisive and appearing crazy character. Also Shakespeare uses diction in Claudius's speech pattern in showing how insecure of his power.

Imagery is the key element in poetry that paints the image in the mind of the reader.  The senses that imagery provides for the reader engages to actually feel, smell, touch, and hear in the poems own world.   For example in the poem introduction to Poetry, " I say drop a mouse into a poem, and watch him prob his way out". The author Billy Collins really illustrates the imagery of the mouse really trying to wiggle his way out.  The imagery helps the reader completely visualize escape from where the mouse it at.  Also another example of imagery in the "OUT,OUT" by Robert Frost he does a great job painting the image of the 5 mountain ranges one behind another. "Five mountain ranges one behind the other.". Another element in poetry is figurative language, in the poem to an Athlete Dying Young, is a filled with metaphors to describe a deeper meaning. For example eyes the shady nigh has shut, Cannot see the record cut" this line explains that the fact that he has died young is good in the sense the "runner" does not need to see his record broken.

Poetic sounds are what makes poetry flow and allow poetry to express all of its emotions. The reader has a chance to hear the emotional of the poem wether its a sad, angry, or happy type poem. For example To An Athlete dying young has an AA, BB rhyme-scheme allowing for a smooth and enjoyable read for the readers. Most poems have rhymeschems is because most people prefer reading poems that rhyme which helps the reader understand the poem better because the flow is kept up throughout the poem. Also another key literary device in poetry is onomonpia, onomonipa, enables a word in the poem to make the sound it sounds like in real life when it is read.
